Welcome to Eastern Mediterranean University where you will receive education at the highest standards in the world.
With nearly 15 thousand students from 105 different countries and over 1.000 academics from 35 different countries, EMU is the most significant project of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a state-uni- versity providing quality education services. As the first and only state university of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus established by law, our university offers its students education and research opportuni- ties at the highest levels world-wide, in accordance with its slogan of “Knowledge, Science, Wisdom, Fu- ture". Established in 1979 as the Institute of Higher Technology and transformed into a state university in 1986 under the Statute Establishing the North Cyprus Education Foundation and Eastern Mediterranean University upon the approval of the Turkish Repub- lic of Northern Cyprus Assembly, our university, now known as Eastern Mediterranean University, cele- brates its 45th year in education this year. Commit- ted to high-quality education standards, international outreach, global visibility, and academic excellence, our university has integrated numerous success sto- ries, accreditations, national and international collab- orations, various memberships, countless academic works, and numerous socio-cultural events into its 45-year history, solidifying its status as a true world university.
EMU has been distinguished as the leading university in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, according to the latest world university rankings published by the UK-based Times Higher Education. These rankings, among the most widely respected global references, assessed 1,907 universities from 108 countries, plac- ing EMU within the 601-800 band. Additionally, EMU is ranked in the third highest tier among universities in the Republic of Türkiye. The university's interna- tional standing has been further affirmed by various independent global ranking organizations. Notably, in May 2024, the Round University Ranking (RUR) list- ed EMU 6th globally in International Student Diversity category with a score of 99.545, and 113th in Interna- tional Academic Staff Diversity with a score of 90.364.
In the 2024 Times Higher Education Young University Rankings, which highlight the top universities found- ed within the last 50 years, Eastern Mediterranean University achieved the rank of 151st globally. Within this category, EMU also claimed the 4th spot among universities in the Republic of Türkiye.
Furthermore, the quality of education provided by our university has been demonstrated by its high rankings in global ranking lists published by many independ- ent ranking organizations such as ShanghaiRanking, QS, U.S. News, Nature Index, and EduRank. The pro- grams of Eastern Mediterranean University accredit- ed by leading independent bodies in various fields of higher education, including ABET, AQAS, CIDA, ASI- IN, EAQUALS, and NAAB, is additional proof that our education quality aligns with international standards.
EMU, a close follower and enforcer of national stand- ards and regulations, views international accreditation and monitoring as fundamental to its advancement. EMU holds full membership in the Turkish Universities Association, the International Association of Universi- ties, the European University Association, the Com- munity of Mediterranean Universities, the Eurasian Universities Union, and the Federation of the Univer- sities of the Islamic World.
Our university has many collaboration and student exchange agreements with prominent universities all around the world, such as ESTIA University in France, the University of Bologna in Italy, the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, Virgina Tech, the University of North Texas, the State University of New York at New Paltz, and the University of the Incarnate Word in the United States, Woosong University in South Korea, China Three Gorges University in Chi- na, and Duesseldorf University of Applied Sciences and Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany. EMU has memorandum agreements with 195 univer- sities in 47 countries and student exchange agree- ments with 44 universities worldwide.
Eastern Mediterranean University proudly boasts over 75.000 graduates from various cultures and coun- tries, who have achieved notable success globally. This success is no mere coincidence. Our university offers a vast and green campus equipped with facili- ties such as the Lala Mustafa Paşa Sports Complex, Yasin Düşüner Stadium, tennis, football, and basket- ball courts, as well as dormitories, restaurants, mar- kets, and cafes. These amenities, combined with the sports, cultural, and artistic activities organized by our departments, provide a comfortable and secure environment where students can thrive academical- ly and socially in a diverse and international setting. Furthermore, you have the opportunity to join approx- imately 50 different clubs at our university, including Astronomy and Space Sciences, Mountaineering and Nature Sports, Dance, Theater, Search and Rescue, Photography, Archery, E-sports, Anime, and more, allowing you to pursue your interests and explore var- ious activities.
Our university also hosts the student societies of our students coming from 105 different countries. With the support of the Rector's Office, these societies organize events where they promote their countries and cultures. By joining your country's student soci- ety, you will have the chance to participate in these events and help showcase your nation and engage in activities organized by students from other countries to learn about different cultures.
My advice to you is that, while you fulfil your respon- sibilities in your professional lives, always take part in social, cultural, sporting and artistic events. Partici- pating in these events will aid in your adjustment to campus life, offer substantial social benefits, and help you build lasting friendships. Additionally, be sure to explore the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, a Mediterranean gem. The island, rich in historical and cultural heritage from various civilizations over mil- lennia, is home to many museums and historic sites. Take advantage of its pleasant climate, clean air, and peaceful surroundings to enjoy the local attractions and have memorable experiences during your stay.
