Dear Students,
Welcome to Eastern Mediterranean University and to the EMU family.
Today, you are beginning not only your university education, but also an important journey filled with new experiences, friendships, cultures, and opportunities that will help shape your future. At Eastern Mediterranean University, our aim is to provide you with a strong academic education while creating an environment in which you can grow socially, culturally, personally, and through sport.
Founded in 1979 as the Institute of Higher Technology and transformed into a state university in 1986 under Law No. 18/86, Eastern Mediterranean University has developed into a well-established institution of higher education with a strong academic tradition, an international student and academic community, and graduates living and working around the world.
Guided by the principles of Knowledge, Science, Wisdom and the Future, EMU places academic quality, research, internationalisation, scientific advancement, social responsibility, and a student-centred university experience among its highest priorities.
One of EMU's greatest strengths is its truly international character. Students and academics from many different countries come together on our campus, creating a diverse and multicultural learning environment. Studying at EMU therefore offers you much more than a degree: it gives you the opportunity to encounter different perspectives, build international friendships, and develop the skills and outlook needed to become a global citizen.
EMU continues to strengthen the quality of its education through its achievements in international university rankings and through internationally recognised programme accreditations. A number of EMU programmes undergo rigorous quality assurance and accreditation processes conducted by respected international organisations such as ABET, AQAS, CIDA, ASIIN, EAQUALS, and NAAB.
EMU is also part of important international higher education networks, including the European University Association (EUA) and the International Association of Universities (IAU), and maintains academic partnerships with universities around the world. Through student exchange programmes and international agreements, our students have opportunities to broaden their academic experience and spend part of their studies abroad.
Today, our global community of more than 80,000 graduates is one of EMU's greatest strengths. Working and succeeding across different countries, professions, and industries, our graduates form an international network that you are now beginning to become part of.
University life, however, is about much more than lectures, examinations, and earning a degree.
EMU's spacious green campus, sports facilities, stadium, indoor and outdoor courts, student residences, restaurants, cafés, social spaces, and Beach Club provide an environment where you can enjoy an active and fulfilling university experience alongside your academic studies.
Through our student clubs, you can explore your interests, develop new skills, meet new people, and become actively involved in campus life. From culture and the arts to sports, technology, social responsibility, outdoor activities, and performing arts, our clubs offer opportunities for you to discover new interests and develop your talents.
Our international student societies also play an important role in bringing EMU's multicultural identity to life. By joining your country's student society, you can share your culture with the university community while also participating in activities organised by students from other countries and discovering cultures from around the world.
My most important advice to you is simple: do not limit your university experience to the classroom - take part in university life.
Join a student club. Try a new sport. Volunteer for a social responsibility project. Attend campus events. Make friends from different countries. Most importantly, try something you have never tried before. The experiences you gain, the skills you develop, and the friendships you build during your university years will become as much a part of your future as your academic education.
I also strongly encourage you to explore Northern Cyprus during your time here. With its thousands of years of history, rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and Mediterranean lifestyle, Northern Cyprus offers a unique environment to discover throughout your university years. Take time to experience the historic character of Famagusta, its Walled City, coastline, cultural heritage, and vibrant community.
The first step you take at EMU today marks the beginning of a journey that will eventually lead you to graduation. Along the way, you will face challenges, work hard, learn new things, meet new people, and perhaps have experiences that will change the direction of your life.
